Literacy Development

Learning to read is a one of the most important skills to teach children. Parents and caregivers have an important role to play in children’s literacy development both before and after they start school. Teaching children to read is a process that has been researched and evidence from scientific studies has accumulated over the past several decades to provide strong guidance to teachers about the most effective teaching strategies.


The foundations of literacy – phonological awareness, vocabulary and oral language. All these begin to develop in the early years of life, before children begin formal reading instruction at school.
